NUM - Strike looms at Zululand Anthracite colliery

Friday , 24 Aug 2007

Strike action looms over wages at Zululand Anthracite Colliery, a subsidiary of Australian based Riversdale Mining Limited.

For two months, the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) has been engaged in wage negotiations with the company and no progress is forthcoming.

The NUM demands a wage increment of 11% across the board and the company offers 7,25%. The NUM declared a dispute with the company at the CCMA and the dispute remains unresolved.

The NUM has since served the company with strike notice and strike action is set to begin on Thursday, 30 August at 8H00.

"This is the only way we can get things moving. The company leaves us with no option but to pursue our demands through strike action" says Bonginkosi Mncwabe, the NUM ‘s Chief Negotiator at Zululand Anthracite Colliery.

Over 600 workers are expected to down tools at the Colliery next week.

"The NUM remains committed to a negotiated settlement but will not allow some dillydally tactics to delay a resolution to matters on the table" argues Mncwabe.
