Gold and Silver RRSP

Gold Silver Bull recently launched a service that helps Canadians who want to include silver and gold in their RRSP and TFSA accounts. By them becoming a Questrade registered dealer, you will first have to open a self-directed account with Questrade and an account with Silver Gold Bull. Both of these are completely FREE to open. Due to the bullion program at Questrade using U.S. dollars and the minimum purchase being USD $1000, your account needs to be funded with a minimum of USD $1000. You are allowed to hold both the CAD and USD in your account and avoid any additional fees.

Once the accounts are setup, you will receive a confirmation and you can start purchasing bullion. During their office hours, all of the purchases must be completed through phone by talking to a sales representative, who will then make the needed updates to your Questrade account. Changes usually reflect the next day. Before the purchase is final, you will need to confirm it via email and then another confirmation email is sent out once the metals arrive at the Brinks vault.

The vault is a IIROC approved facility. The cost of storing your bullion is %1 of your market value per year. The fees are calculated and payments are made every month on the last day of each month. You have an option for the fees being deducted from your RRSP Questrade account or a separate margin account.

The Fine Print

From what we were able to find online, Silver Gold Bullion is one of the most cost along with Regal Assets Canada for adding gold into your RRSP. While they don’t charge you a commission, you will be required to pay the Questrade $19,95/trade commission, priced into the bullion premium. When you buy for your Questrade account you will pay slightly more than what is stated online at the website. If your account is inactive (no trades are made), a fee of $19,95/quarter is applicable for accounts under $5000. These fees are completely normal and in industry standards.
